Another venue obit...

Its only been around a decade, I think that I have been doing hipster/trashy travel, yet this is what can happen.
For Denton, TX, I had listed a joint called Ricks Place at 125 Avenue A-which I described as a Frat boy bar with good bands. Eventually it was sold and operated as the inferno, which had lots of hardcore bands.
That closed and it became known as "the drink on a" which lasted 3 years and closed to "unveil our new concept" which is now the Fry Street Public House, and is now off the hipster/trashy travel radar. Goodbye.

Also on the icky side, I had a joint in Houston called SPY listed at 112 Travis. Well, now the space is called TOC Bar and is celebrating its 11th anniversary and is way full of skeezy folks. http://www.myspace.com/tocbarhouston

More Obits

Also from Cincy-An open book, a gay friendly book shop that also sold candy and club cds is now gone, replaced with a waterbed store???? Now thats out of time!

Dallas-
CD world, which had two locations is no more.
Collectors records-Yet another one...

Denton, TX
The Tomato-Pizza place that was on a block bought by a develop who evicted everyone and the punk kids who hung out there may or may not have torched the block. They hope to reopen someday but it hasnt happened yet.http://www.myspace.com/tomatopizza

More RIPs for Trashy/Hipster Travel

This week I've been updating content for Ohio and in double checking info had to remove the following...

from Cincinnati,
Back when I had "hip" on my mind more than Trashy, I had the Spy Club listed. Well, it closed waaaay back in 2005 or so, presumably from another club called Cliq Clau. The competing club only lasted a year and a half total.

Circle CDs and records-This one is another no brainer. These places are falling like flies.

Cup and Saucer Cafe-A favorite venue for a number of folks, they hosted a bunch of great indie rock shows. Three and a half years and due to some health problems, they threw in the towel. They still have a myspace page...http://www.myspace.com/cupandsaucerinc

Cleaning up Hipster soon to be Trashy travel

A few hours into editing and I realized I should perhaps give a little shout out to all the things once listed that are now being removed from the site.

Bar 13 in New York City-I used to live here every Thursday and Sunday. Thursdays were parties with Michael T and Alex English, while Sunday were the Infamous Shout party. Now its dbs and double dbs. Sigh. Still open, just not TT worthy.

California-
Penny Lane Records of Westwood Village in LA
Arons Records
Bionic Records Fullerton Location
These are no brainers, Amazing that some still survive.

The Lava Lounge-given to me by a hip friend. It was a "tiki" bar and now its called "the woods"

The I's kill the routes

As we travel on all our alt route roadtrips, we always admire the old architecture and relics we run across on our adventures. All over the country, local politicians lobby for the interstate to come through, lest they lose out on presumed economic development. The thing is, due to highway safety regulations and the horrible "highway beautification act" the thousands of motorists that used to drive by the stores of something like Route 1 now ride down a souless interstate, unaware that any town even exists that could have stores and restaurants that they would want to visit and spend their money.
Now many of these old routes and being turned into interstate style roads and the road widening they have to do to get the highway funds kills tons of amazing old timey fun. This article sort of talks about it, but nobody talks about interstates being bad for local economies everywhere. This one has a quote about the internet taking away business, but thats really not true. People still enjoy shopping in person and will buy things in actual stores they would never buy online......

Moviehouse is celebrating its three-year anniversary on Valentine’s Day. So even though it’s our birthday, it’s you that gets the gifts.
We challenged our favorite filmmakers, our intrepid staff and even a couple of diehard fans to make us 3-minute romantic movies following 3 simple rules. The result: brand new films by puppet-master Leat Klingman, dashing documentarian Daniel Ross, graceful dance film director Marta Renzi, creative playmaker Chloe Bass, the ceaselessly entertaining Carlotta Propersi and Sketch Projector Shantall Martin. They join Moviehouse staffers Austin Duggan and Chris Henderson for a celebration worthy of 3 years of the very best interactive video.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Sarah Jacobson
An evening to honor DIY filmmaker Sarah Jacobson, and a benefit for the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant. Filmmakers, punk rockers, feminists, and musicians gather to remember filmmaker Sarah Jacobson (1970–2004). The evening will include an appearance from Sarah’s mother Ruth Jacobson, and her sister Lee Jacobson.
Sarah Jacobson (1971–2004) was a filmmaker who wrote, produced, and directed several movies in the 1990s, including Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Any More and I Was a Teenage Serial Killer. Sarah’s films reflected her punk sensibilities, her feminist beliefs, and her dedication to DIY principles. She died in 2004 at the age of 32.
After her death, filmmaker Sam Green and Sarah’s mother established the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant for young women “whose work embodies some of the things that Sarah stood for: a fierce DIY approach to filmmaking, a radical social critique, and a thoroughly underground sensibility
The evening will begin with a short screening of samples of previous grant winners and two of Sarah’s short films. Filmmaker Barbara Hammer and Sarah’s mother Ruth will then speak and introduce Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Any More. The evening will also include video tributes from Sarah’s fans and friends including Kathleen Hanna, Allison Anders, Tamra Davis, Sam Green, George Kuchar, and Craig Baldwin.
Glasslands Gallery
289 Kent, at South 5th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
7p doors, 8p show; $5 suggested donation at the door, all proceeds will go to the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant

The L Magazine Presents: Wavves at Brooklyn Bowl
Posted by Lauren Beck on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 3:17 PM
In honor of Fat Tuesday and its venerable tradition of indie rock and bicycle processions, we here at The L Magazine, in conjunction with Southern Comfort, have organized a night of lo-fi surf punk and two-wheeled parade pageantry to put New Orleans to shame. we've got Wavves playing a free show at Brooklyn Bowl with rising beat-maker, dance-starter MNDR. Either way, it'll mark Wavves' first NYC show with his new band, consisting of the former bassist and drummer for Jay Reatard (RIP).
Did we mention the parade? There will also be a parade—a Brooklynized Mardi Gras affair featuring a marching band, burlesque dancers (including a float with Angie Pontani, Helen Pontani, Darlinda Just Darlinda, Akynos, the Maine Attraction and Lil Miss Lixx), beads galore, and the strong possibility of confetti, beginning at 7pm at McCarren Park and Driggs. Costumed revelers and bicyclists are invited to join in as the whole gang rides/walks/skips down Driggs, up Bedford and over to Wythe Avenue, arriving at Brooklyn Bowl around 8pm, where prizes await the best bicycle float, the best-dressed revelers will be crowned king and queen of the Carnival, Southern Comfort flows freely (there will be SoCo drink specials throughout the night), a DJ spins, the bands play, and you might get lucky. So, we'll see you in a few weeks. We'll be the ones asking Wavves about how we can get our hair to look like that.
The small print: This event is for L Magazine newsletter subscribers. The event is 21+. If you'd like to RSVP, just email mardigras@thelmagazine.com, and you will also be added to our newsletter list. You can opt-out at anytime. You must RSVP to attend the event, but admittance is not guaranteed. Admittance will be limited by venue capacity, so be sure to arrive early.
