Gastropolis editor Jonathan Deutsch leads a panel discussion on the ways in which food conveys meaning and aspects of New York Cultural identities. Jonathan Deutsch, Ph.D., co-editor of Gastropolis, is a classically trained chef and Associate Professor. He is the author of five books including Culinary Improvisation (Pearson, 2009). Annie Hauck-Lawson, Ph.D., R.D. the co-editor of Gastropolis, is the president of the Association for the Study of Food and Society, an urban agriculturalist, one of four generations of Brooklyn food growers and gathers. he food voice', a term of her origin, is represented in the works of all panelists here. Jessica B. Harris is a culinary historian & cookbook author who focuses on the food & foodways of the African Diaspora. Her forthcoming works include Rum Drinks (Chronicle 2010) and High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America (Bloomsbury 2011). Mark Russ Federman is the 3rd generation owner of Russ & Daughters an "appetizing store" which has been selling smoked, cured, and pickled fish products on The Lower East Side for approximately 100 years. Annie Lanzillotto is a writer and performance artist.
