End Time: Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 4:00am

DJs Billy Miller (Norton Records, A-Bones), Girlsoul (Soul A' Go-Go) and host Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus will spin fabulous instrumental records--mostly from late fifties and early sixties--all night long at the fabulous Trophy Bar, Lower Williamsburg's hippest night club.
Along with running America's finest record company Norton Records, singing for one of America's greatest rock'n'roll bands the A-Bones, Billy Miller is a world-class collector of crazy-ass records of the pre-Beatles era. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPN53XQXhnc
If you dig music that features wailing saxophones, pounding drums, outrageous organs and wild guitars--without anybody singing about his/her feelings--you need to be at The Wang Dang Doodle! No pretentious poetry masquerading as lyrics! No off-key singing!! No singer trying to show off his/her "magnificent vocal range" by stretching notes into the stratosphere, whether the song needs it or not!!! Only instrumental recordings will be played--mostly from original 45 RPM records. This will be the BOSS EVENT OF THE YEAR!!
It all happens at Trophy Bar--Lower Williamsburg's grooviest club--easy to get to on the L-Train (Marcy stop) or the G-Train (Broadway stop).
No cover charge. Free candy.

Hobotech Hoe Down Set for May 1st in Brooklyn
Brooklyn, NY – Growing right along with the number of foreclosures and laid off Americans, Brooklyn’s Hobotech posse bring their unique Great Depression meets cutting edge Techno sound to a bigger Brooklyn warehouse venue appropriately on the traditional spring party date, as well as the signal for imminent disaster, May Day, Saturday May 1st.
The Hobotechies will celebrate May Day starting at 10pm with blogger, scientist and DJ FutureBen, followed by Hobotech regulars FreeBass and Hobotrail. Around 1am Hobotech creator Jon Margulies will spin followed by ATOM. The night will climax with a tag team set from The Rising Smoke of the Hobo Kings (aka Haj - Resident DJ of Sub Swara & Freek Factory - and Jon Margulies). The DJs will be joined by the accordion boombox stylings of Dallow Texino and the Hobo Percussion Orchestra featuring Dave Sharma (also of Sub Swara) and Zemi17.
Not content to be just another Brooklyn warehouse throw down, this Hobotech event encourages all partiers to dress up Hobo style including suggestions such as high-tech hobo, low-tech robot, tech-house hillbilly, boxcar betty, Experimental Plasma Wave Bindle Scientist, stew bum sys-admin, and Utah Phillips K. Dick.
Other event aspects that will add to the post-economy atmosphere include “some sort of model train madness;” Hobo IDs for costumed attendees with photography by Joe Che, and Hobo Intake Specialist Anu; video from the Housewives Guide To Anatomy, Doctor Mojo, and TwinA; plus a final visual element from The Amazing Bindlestick Blinkytron, an interactive light installation by Image Node.
For ticket purchase info, to join the Hobotech mailing list or to download a recent Hobotech mix please go to www.hobo-tech.com. Location info will be given to ticket purchasers.

Picks!

Monday is the last day of the Tim Burton Exhibit at Moma. Its pretty awesome.
If you enjoy my list, please forward to a friend. Also, please try to visit my signature event, Copycat, which is every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at ottos Shrunken Head in the East Village. Its free and is always amazing. Coming to enjoy a tasty beverage while listening to a fantastic band and throwing a buck or two in the tip jar will do tons to support the low priced awesomeness we are gifted enough to have in NYC.

Haven't put a mission statement on here in awhile, so I'll say a few words about this list.
This list is my personal to-do list. WHen you see something listed here, these are events that I would, under perfect circumstances, attend. Band shows listed here usually contain at least one band that I would recommend. Sometimes there are shows with bands that are not my thing, but they contain some other attraction that would make the event worthwhile. It is culled from many other sources encompassing all forms of events we have here in NYC, mostly of the inexpensive variety. I try to do my best, but things often change, so try to double check the info whenever possible.
Evan

WHOOPING CRANE brings it large at HANK'S SALOON in Brooklyn with two of our kind buds - psychedelic garage overlords MADAM ROBOT & THE LUST BRIGADE (these guys just keep getting better and better) and neo-no wave nihilists THE HOREHOUND (the biceps on their lead singer and the drummer's backup vocals alone make them worth seeing.) Of course, WHOOPING CRANE will be walkin' the buzz with the fuzz and the hot smokin' sassafrass heavy boogie. Together, we intend to burn the joint (which shouldn't be too hard seeing as how the place is already engulfed in flames.)
The show is FREE and Hank's has reasonably priced beers and a laid-back vibe to keep you from gettin' uptight. It's also conveniently located, with access to every train imaginable at the Atlantic Ave. stop.46 3rd Ave. (@ Atlantic) Brooklyn

The Vanishing Icons of Metropolitan Avenue: A History of Williamsburg’s Handmade Shop Signs
Not so long ago, a number of retro, sculptural shop signs lent a distinctive flavor to the area just east of the BQE in Williamsburg, among them a giant paintbrush, a diamond ring and the hammer that’s still outside Crest Hardware on Metropolitan Avenue. Neighborhood resident and writer Karen Hudes looks into the story behind the signs, about 75 of which were crafted 30 years ago by an artist named Stanley Wisniewolski.
At the exhibit, photos from the city’s Municipal Archives bring to light Williamsburg’s streetscape in the 80s, which was rich in oversized coffee cups, handbags and cows’ heads made out of Styrofoam marking each storefront. See a collection of Wisniewolski’s original signs on display, find out why the smoke shop installation caused such a stir, and take in the vision of one of the neighborhood’s pioneering graphic designers (who certainly wouldn’t be the last).

Holiday inns

I never realized that the movie came first. This is from a gentleman named Rich Dean on the Roadside fans list

Kemmons Wilson sold snacks in a Memphis movie theatre as a kid. After years of building up a successful home construction business, he took his family on a trip to Washington DC, having trouble finding motels or hotels that were not only acceptable but didn't charge a small fortune for each kid, he decided to start a motel chain in which there would never be any extra charge for kids if they were in the same room as the parents and so picked the name of Holiday Inn after the popular movie starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire.

Once he built up Holiday Inn to the point of a few thousand locations worldwide, he sold it and retired but couldn't sit still so embarked on a timeshare project next door to Walt Disney World on 300 acres that he called Orange Lake. Anyone who has stayed at Orange Lake has probably viewed the in house channel showing his life story. Kemmons died a few years ago in his 90's by which time Orange Lake had expanded to 1300 acres with more than 100,000 timeshare owners. After his passing the family bought additonal timeshare locations starting with Lake Geneva WI, Panama City Beach FL and Ascutney VT, then Myrtle Beach SC and Gatlinburg TN. Now they have entered into the affiliation with the present owners of Holiday Inns with the vacation club.

More dead things

As I get Trashy Travel in shape, had to remove this Baltimore venue,
The Supreme Imperial-Live music club; Alt-performance club) 223 Pearl St.,Baltimore, MD 21201
It was an alt art space, kinda like the 50 we have in Brooklyn. A blog shows some of the former important club spaces of days gone by...from Baltimores Dead Venue Project.

Also defunct, the larger Fletchers, which seems to have had big, inconvient shows and Reptilian Records, a punk rock record shop.
RIP-Fletcher's -701 South Bond St.,Baltimore 410.558.1889-Fells Point
RIP-Reptilian Records-403 S Broadway Baltimore MD (410) 327-6853-Fells Point, specializing in punk.

The New York April Fools' Committee Is Proud to Announce:
New York City's 25th Annual April Fools' Day Parade
The 25th Annual April Fools' Day Parade will begin at Fifth Avenue and 59th Street at noon, Thursday, April 1. Rain or shine, the parade will march down 5th Avenue to Washington Square Park for the post-parade festivities and selection of the King or Queen of Fools from the costumed marching look-alikes.
The theme for this year's parade is Up, Up and Away. Led by Grand Marshall Ben Bernanke, the parade will kick off with the Where's-the-Money Marching Band playing this year's theme song by the Fifth Dimension "Up, Up and Away in My Beautiful Balloon." Color commentary will be provided by Sarah Palin for her new Fox TV show "We Make It Up, You Believe It." Thanks to a contribution by a secret donor in honor of the parade's 25th anniversary, 10,000 red, white, and blue helium balloons, each with a crisp one-dollar bill attached, will be released along the parade route.
As the parade ends at Washington Square Park, the party begins, featuring live music, food, concessions, ans entertainment. There will be an Interracial Marriage Chapel officiated by Louisiana Judge Keith Bardwell; a Gay Marriage Counseling Booth manned by Miss California, Carrie Prejean; a Marriage Counseling Booth manned by South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford; and a David Carradine Enhanced Sexual Techniques Booth. The U.S. Secret Service will stand guard by a Meet-the-President Booth where President Obama will dispense "change pills" for change you can swallow.
The public is encouraged to participate, in or out of costume, with or without floats, and may join the procession at any point along the parade route. Floats can be no wider than 10-feet and no longer than 25-feet. They can be self-propelled, towed, pushed or pulled. Customized bicycles, tricycles, baby carriages and aerial balloons are welcome. All participants are costumed look-alikes, and the Parade Committee assumes no liability for damages caused by satire.
Parade starts: Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, Manhattan
Noon; $free

Creationizm, Believe in This! as seen in the Village Voice
It takes most people years to write a novel, at HiChristina we're going to do it tonight in 1 hour! HiChristina is hosting the Internationally Renowned Monthly Conference of Amateur and Professional Creators. At this inaugural party we're going to write an entire novel! After coming up with the basic story and making the general stylistic choices by consensus, we will sit in a long line and each person will write five pages of the story, simultaneously. The person at the beginning of the line pens the beginning of the story and the person next to them writes what comes next, and so on down the line. Conference with each other to coordinate epic scenes and to keep details consistent. All the writing begins at once and the novel will be finished in about the time it takes to write five pages. Afterwards there will be an intermission while the two editors pull everything together. Then we gather again and hear a dramatic rendition and summary of the complete story. Wooo! Ah the feeling of accomplishment! The actual physical novel will be available at our biannual Creationizm party.
Future parties will focus respectively on:
__ cartoonists (draw a full comic book in 1 hour),
__ multimedia artists (a 3 channel presentation in 1 hour) ,
__ screenplay writers (a blockbuster or indie snag thrill in one hour),
__ clay-sculptors (better than Brancusi in 1 hour),
__ dancers (a full modern dance piece of epic proportions in 1 hour),
__ clothing designers (a whole new collection in 1 hour)
__ painters (a ginormous painting in 1 hour).
RSVP to fritzandchristina@gmail.com
$20 includes your own digital copy of the great work.
