Please bands! Keep posting on myspace!

As a music fan and promoter, I would like to encourage my friends in bands to continue to use and update their myspace even though its "dying" . Heres Why:
1. It remembers my favorite bands better than I do: I have seen hundreds of bands, but can only remember a few dozen off the top of my head. Thats a lot for me, a super fan, but not for the general public. Thanks to the shows page, I can put in my zipcode, select bands I'm friends with and find shows that you I may have missed amongst the random birthday parties, dj nights and food crawls on facebook.
2. There is no better way to have people listen to song samples: You guys are awesome. Many bands are not. The other day I spent 4 hours listening to 96 bands on myspace to see which ones I liked. If I had tried to look them up individually, it would have taken a month and I would have given up and not given them a chance. When I get to say, just a bands facebook or blog or twitter page, its way too much work to click on a video link and wait for it to load. And I work harder than the average music fan.
3. I can find you when you are on a random tour and I am on a random trip: Thanks to the zipcode function again, I was able to find favorite bands on tour and find a relatively obscure 2 day music festival in North Carolina, and a 2 day punk, hardcore and garage festival in areas I was planning to visit. To this day, it is still quite difficult to put in say, "live punk rock boston" or "live garage rock wisconsin" and find a show that you know right away you want to see. Facebook certainly doesn't do this. Last.fm may have some shows, but not all. Myspace keeps it all in one place. I can actually visit a town, put in shows near this zip code, pull down garage rock from the menu and discover new bands that I want to see. This is how we wound up seeing two touring minneapolis bands in Columbus Ohio last year, and I hope we can continue to discover new bands along the way..
So please bands! Continue to post and update your myspace!

Disney Whirled

Lady Travel and I are planning a couple of trips later this year; one is a California trip with the ultimate goal being a visit to the California State Fair, and the other is a visit to the Harry Potter World at Universals Islands of Adventure. Both trips are going to be theoretically including Disney Visits, which has turned out to be a Wild Ride, shopping wise.
Like many folks, I have a number of "discount" options. I have AAA, some work discounts, a timeshare(note to all, don't EVER buy a timeshare) which has a travel service, etc. After shopping around, its more confusing than ever, and somehow with travel, you want to make sure you get a great deal.
So in my shopping heres what I found:
A) Its best to live in Florida, as many of the best deals are only for people in Florida, but it also blacks out many of the days you may actually want to visit.
B) Disney FINALLY (Its been DECADES) offers a seasons pass for every single US park, but not including the foreign parks. The problem is, its 700 dollars, which is a lot and most likely too much, because your average Disneyland trip would only be a couple of days. The only way I see it being worthwhile, is if you planned to take all your vacations in that one year period, and it included multiple visits to California.
C) Its all very confusing and you will wind up paying more than you think you should. Sigh.
Links I found:
About article on Disney
A huge bulletin trying to explain Disney Tickets. This is the metaphor for how complicated it is.
Mousesavers also has some tricks.

Its So much cheaper and simpler and more relaxing to just visit Knoebels.

Trashy Travel finally livish..

After agonizing over what to use and how serious to be with trashy travel.com after the fall of geocities, and just using the horrid yahoo small business for now, I have decided to just go the easy route, so I have slapped up all my pages of out of date material up on trashytravel.com just using google though I am not 100 percent pleased with the choice. Its just easy and I can update on the go and hopefully they won't be going away anytime soon.

I also ran across the new? site, wish you were here, that visits some classic restaurants like I enjoy doing from time to time...Heres an article about Berns Steakhouse in Tampa..

Jobless Wednesday
Weekly Anti-networking Cocktail Party
No job to do today? Wondering what all your other unemployed friends are doing today besides going to a 9 to 5 job? Well, look no further!! This afternoon, join your fellow unemployed (yay freedom!), self-employed (make-your-own schedule) and alterna-business (we won't ask) associates for a day of doing things one can only do without a job. We will be playing foreign and made-up card games, taking turns calling everyone in our phones who we haven't spoken to in over a year, hopscotch. It's the middle of the day (because we all got up at noon), and the middle of the work week, but its the beginning of your weekend! Only in NYC is being jobless so rewarding. And now at HiChristina earn badges for doing jobless things. "I'm not really actively looking for a job mom, I haven't been in three months, that's how I got the unabashedly unemployed badge from HiChristina, there's a rub off decal too!" Collect all five badges, including the 'get-rich-quick-scheme-of-the-year badge!' It's all fun and no work today at the HiChristina anti-networking cocktail party. Hand-made muttled drinks by Christina Ewald. And a new guest host every week.
$20 dues gets you a members only club card good for a full month of visits.

at galapagos in dumbo, preceded by nerd night speed dating
Nerd Nite
Nerd Nite; It's Like the Discovery Channel with Beer. First, Kate Jones talks about Pi. It's not just a non-terminating irrational number; it¹s a way of life. Second, Paco from Math For American discusses, Mathematicians: Behind the Music. Go behind the scenes of the mathematician subculture. Finally, Ames Grawert makes The Legal Case for Gay Marriage. Grawert, a self-described "big city lawyer" (admission pending...) will make the argument, sure to be controversial in Brooklyn, that an honest reading of the Equal Protection Clause, history, and existing precedent would require state and federal authorities to recognize same-sex marriage rights.
Speed Dating
New York's most unusual love connection darling is back on Friday March 12, 2010 at Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO as Nerd Nite brings back its revered hetero speed dating. 25 smart gals. 25 wise fellas. 50 smart hearts yearning for one another (and a few cocktails). After speed dating, regular Nerd Nite features presentations about Pi, the seedy underbelly of mathematicians, and the legal case for gay marriage

NY Capital Region Regional Specialties

My special someone hails for the Greater Albany area. At some point I had asked her about whether the Rochester/Syracuse areas regional hot dog specialty, a "red hot" or "white hot", topped with meat sauce, had ever made it down towards her area. To her knowledge, they hadn't.
For those who don't know, a red hot is usually a pork and beef dog, dyed to a bright red color, while the white hot is usually a variation of a bratwurst. The meat sauce in the area is often refered to as "greek based" for the prescence of some oregano and a sweeter taste. It may be similar to what they call Chili in the greater Cincinnati area, but usually with a little thicker consistancy and a darker color.
This week on serious eats, they had their "Hot Dog of the Week" which turned out to be Mini Hot Dogs from Troy, NY, which is in the greater Albany area. Featured mostly at the Troy Pork Store and a cool joint called Famous Lunch, the regional dog indeed made it down to Albany, but shrunk down in the transition. Here they are only 3 inches....(some say they are four inches)
Sadly, the Troy pork store has closed due to development, but Rolfs pork store remains.

This is a story of an icon.
There are locations in this city with a history and energy so powerful
their story can galvanize a community. 142 11th Ave, New York City, New
York is the former site of the world's most infamous leather bar: The
Eagle's Nest. From 1970 through March 5th, 2000, the space held nights of
passion, beauty, conflict and controversy.
This Friday, March 5th, ten years to the day of the closing of The Eagle's
Nest, you are invited to experience an art installation exploring the
fragility of infamy, the passing of phenomenon and the power that memories
can hold. "142 11th Ave, New York City, New York" is a 12' by 15'
installation of 88 pieces of etched glass, wrought iron and an all
encompassing sound composition.

with
GABE & JENNY
Whether you've seen Avatar or care about Angelina's dress, you kinda HAVE to watch the Oscars, right?
This year, instead of slogging through four boring hours on your couch, come watch at the Bell House with WitStream.com, the comedy-only microblogging website. Gabe Liedman (Big Terrific) and Jenny Slate (Saturday Night Live) will serve as your MCs, entertaining during commercials with their hilarious analysis. Meanwhile, WitStream will run it's LIVE feed of clever asides and scathing Oscar commentary from over 200 of the nation's funniest comedians and writers PLUS we'll have ballots and prizes for those who wish to predict the evening's big winners.
Gabe and Jenny have been besties and comedic life partners since Y2K. They have become mainstay darlings of the New York City comedy scene with weekly performances at BIG TERRIFIC in Brooklyn, and a bi-coastal sold-out UCB one-lady show each. Oh, and no doy, you may know Jenny as the newest, most exciting cast member on SNL!
In other words: if you think you'd rather watch The Oscars with anyone else, you are literally crazy.

Its impossible to find an Italian sub in NYC

From pennsylvaniatrip08

We have lots of food options in NYC, but there are certain gaping holes in our local food. I grew up in Miami and spent some time in Boston. For me, the perfect Italian sub is a mix of cold cuts and then lettuce, tomato, sweet onions, then topped with pepper relish, a sprinkle of oregano, and oil and vinegar. Just outside of the city, you can find subs made this way, though sometimes you have to make sure they don't put pickles and mayonnaise on it. I find this combination of cold, sour, sweet and tangy to be perfect.
In Miami, we had one place that was absolute sub perfection this way. It was called Georges Super Subs. They didn't have the pepper relish, but on each table there was a jar of pepperoncini. The sub was layered first with meat and cheese to protect the bread. Then a layer of shredded lettuce and tomato. A sprinkle of Oregano. Then a house dressing I believe to be no more than cheap salad oil and white vinegar, with a little bit of salt and garlic powder. Another layer of meat and cheese, then it was topped with TONS of finely shaved sweet onion and a bit more oregano and dressing. It was huge. They shoved a fork in each one. To eat it, you had to take the fork, and use it to wedge the onions and other contents into the bread and grab it. Once you picked it up, you could not put it down, or it would explode. You would take a bite of sandwich, then take a bite of pepper. It was absolute sub perfection. Sadly, it closed long ago.
The store was not owned by "George" anymore when it closed, but the son of the Original owner had a place in Tampa called Gordys. Tales had it that Gordy made a similar sub, but that sadly is long gone as well. There was even a mini empire of Gordys with stores in Gainesville and Kendall. Sigh.

So my perfect sub was gone, but I contented myself with, and grew to enjoy the above described above. The one pictured may be the most perfect one I have had in couple of years. Its from a joint called Subs and Six Packs in PA. We were driving along and passed it. I did a U-turn and came back to try it. It just had to be good. And it was. The Italian was exactly what it should be. But there are lots of great subs all over PA.

My current favorite one is at the White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City. It needs no press as the line is huge. They specialize in their own pepper relish which rocks. Click on the Link to see Roadfoods article about it.

Just about any pizza joint in Boston makes an okay Italian sub too.

But for some reason, when you get a sub in New York, even in Little Italy, they cannot resist the urge to top them with marinated mushrooms or roasted red pepper. Both of those flavors overwhelm rather than compliment the meat like the hot pepper relish does. Another head scratcher was when I asked for hot peppers at an italian deli and they put what was basically red pepper flakes marinated in oil which was plenty hot, but it was only hot and painful to eat. I guess I will just have to make my own, or go on more road trips.

To Do list: Hodads of San Diego

On our next big trip, we plan to stop at Hodads in San Diego, who make a patty out of bacon to top their burgers. Heres a blog post about it.

The Dixie Square Mall

Reading my newsgroups today, I saw a piece about the Dixie Square Mall just outside of Chicago. It opened in the sixties and closed in the late 70's. They used the closed mall for an indoor car chase in the Blues Brothers film. Then it was used as a temporary high school(!?)briefly and then was closed and left to rot.
A few attempts were made to renovate or demolish it, but then they ran into asbestos issues and it stopped. It's very rare for any structure of this type to be sitting dormant for so long.
Now it appears that it will finally be demolished for....a strip mall, with maybe a target.
Here are a few posts about it from people much more fearless than I...
