Nov. 30: Creation In Reverse
with David Byrne
Open City Dialogue (OCD) is a bi-monthly lecture series unraveling on alternating Mondays in the backroom of Pete’s. Short (35-40 minute) lectures are woven together from the common thread of people’s obsessions, with guests coming from all over Greater New York. Whether academic or crackpot; celebrated or unsung, our lecturers all have something to tell you…
OCD is held on alternate Mondays at 7:30pm.
“What I'm going to talk about is an insight I've had about creation. That insight is that the context largely determines what is written, sung or performed. That doesn't sound like so big of an insight, but it's actually backwards from what I perceive to be conventional wisdom- which is that creation emerges out of some interior connection or upswelling of passion or feeling that innevitably needs an outlet. I think the passion is there, but it's largely unconsciously tailored to fit an available context and circumstance."
David Byrne is a musician, visual artist and filmmaker. A co-founder of the band Talking Heads, he has also released several solo albums and garnered an Academy Award for his score to Bernardo Bertolucci’s film The Last Emperor. His art includes photography and installation works, and has been published in five books, most recently Arboretum. His latest projects include a musical collaboration with Fatboy Slim invoking the life of Imelda Marcos; a travelogue entitled Bicycle Diaries; and Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, Byrne’s second album with Brian Eno. Last year, he designed a series of artistic bike racks to be installed throughout New York City.

Bring your leftovers for the potluck – and we’ll eat and drink and dance again until we can’t take it anymore. Your eccentric cousin Mr Jonathan Toubin will bust out the tunes and Enid’s will offer up a variety of $5 holiday drink specials: frozen Harrison, hot dickens cider (say it out loud!), hot maple toddy, and a tecate con tequila shot. Come party all night with the wild side of the family…

Jean Claude

I grew up in Miami and went to High School in the Eighties. During that time, Miami became the Canvas for Christo and Jean-Claude and their Surrounded Islands.
Years later, I was so excited when we finally got the Gates in New York city. I had multiple gallery hops to see them.
Christos wife and art partner passed away.

Halloween Redux
This Friday the 13th, relive Halloween the way we meant for you to experience it two weeks ago. Brooklyn Wonderland was the all-out dance party component to our over-the-top two-loft Halloween extravaganza Masquerade Macabre...until it got shut down just as the party got going. With handpicked DJs (alphabetical order): Dhundee, Dirty-Finger, Moldover, Reaganomics, Shakey, Stone, and Stylus (Brooklyn Wonderland founder). Expect eclectic, irresistible beats and grooves 'till the sun comes up. Live Percussion by Blood Drums & Percussion Pete. Visuals by the Glassbead Collective. MC Nachy Bless. Delicious Dub Pies served all night; breakfast to follow if we ask nicely. Same amazing loft we partied in till morning on Halloween, with lots of cozy nooks + crannies to chill in, as well as a 2,000sq ft sprung wood dance floor and a 6,000sq ft roof. Yes, wear your Halloween costume. You know we will.

If you've ever had leftover deli rare roast beef, heres one way I like to use it.
Slice some onion and put it in a skillet over low heat till it starts to wilt.
add the roast beef and some store bought bbq sauce,
stir it all together until its all heated.
Eat it on a brioche, challah or potato roll with some swiss cheese.

Bands of the Week

Lady Ditto and I went this week to Cake Shop to check out this solo lite electro act from Canada with one of the best voices we have heard in a long time. http://www.myspace.com/diamondringsmusic

Friday Night, one of the first bands I ever saw in New York played again at Ottos Shrunken Head. A rare band leftover from the riot girl scene in the mid 90s, they still blow me away with their classic east village punk.
www.myspace.com/mongrelbitch

The most hyped about show we saw were The Suzan at the Tribeca Grand. I must say, they are fun for sure, but I'm not positive they are more worthy than any number of other bands for getting this sort of buzz.
http://www.myspace.com/thesuzan

Right after the Grand and their pricey drinks and swank digs, we headed over the the Queers, Beers and Rears party at Cakeshop to Catch Guts for Garters. Check out their really fun song "Hired Help". It recalls early B-52s. Many of their songs mention radios, Transistors and the like. Fun!

Beginning with the era when simple chophouses and oyster bars dominated the culinary scene, he charts the city's transformation into the world restaurant capital it is today."

‘AccesSoirée’, a party for our supporters and friends.
A black and white attired ball where you brighten up your get-ups with
a single, smashing salvaged or vintage accessory. So come with black
and white as the canvas for your very finest or funkiest vintage
accessory; surprise us with an original re-purposed piece of
decorative decadence and the best adornment of the night wins a posh
potable prize.
This unique event is a celebration of style and sensibility, fashion
and frugality, glamour and consciousness. Fabulously contradictory and
really just another excuse to throw a party, guests will be treated
to a guilt free night of class and decadence. Upping the ante in
ethical fashion the face of the project, Sheena Matheiken, will be
dressed head to toe by the rapidly rising star and young designer
Raffaele Ascione. Ascione shows us how to do couture with a conscience
like no other.
Hosted at Blowup Location in Williamsburg on Saturday, November 7th,
with a private rooftop view of Manhattan and DJ sets by fashion
darling Judi Rosen, The Juan MacLean’s Nancy Wang, Holy Ghost and
more from New York’s finest DFA crew.
This is a strictly private party with a limited amount of tickets
available for fans at uniformprojectparty.eventbrite.com

@ House of Yes

Hey Kids, No Parking on ze Dancefloor rolls on and onwards, now a
sunday early into slightly late evening thing, still at the house of
yes and their fab space.
We've got a stellar line up of pro-fessionals to destroy your derriere
to. Ski Beats is the man. Why? Dude produced a number of tracks on Jay
Z's 1st LP, produced Camp Lo's 1st record and a number of other
credits. Spinning alongside him is my man my mellow Brown Bum who's
been doing stuff in the dirty Jerse for ages and has a wide spectrum
of funk and classic hip hop.
Stylus is responsible for the Brooklyn Wonderland parties and recently
smashed it at zzZion, the afterparty for decom. Has beats and pieces
for days.
Tinsletown is a man about town, helped put together a huge benefit for
flux factory on the bushwick boat and many other under-underground
tings. Get hip.
On top of all that my homegrrl and super stoopid dancer / dance
instructor Cathy Richards will be around at 9pm showing folks various
Bboy and hip hop moves.
And on top of Love Grrl's fab smoothies we will have free refreshing
beverages courtesy of Bot.
