WHOOPING CRANE - ALANA & THE ROUGH GEMS - THE HOREHOUND
Thursday at 9:00pm - January 28 at 12:00am
Location The Fifth Estate
506 5th Ave.
Brooklyn, NY
THURS. JAN 27th. WHOOPING CRANE will be slingin' our hook down Park Slope way at the FIFTH ESTATE on that old 5th Ave strip!
And we will be in some rather WHOOP-worthy company too! The show starts at 9PM with the rowdy Russian riff rawk of THE HOREHOUND! Some of the most shout-along-worthy sounds you're going to hear this side of the Urals, fronted by ((( VAL ))), a Gretsch hollowbody-slinging stud that looks like a Slavic mati...nee idol who bench-presses school buses every morning. Ladies and gentlemen, the Horehound.
WHOOPING CRANE takes flight at 10pm and, as always, brings the bumpin' buzzsaw boogie and freak beats to the MAX! It'll give you a better buzz than smacking a beehive. Fuzz bass, cowbells, overdriven P-90s, you know the drill. AND make sure to see us afterward about our upcoming 45 release - yes, it is happening, so maybe you want an advance copy?
Finally, but certainly not least, we are proud as parents to have ALANA AMRAM & THE ROUGH GEMS grace us with their bittersweet serenades of jaded hearts set to soaring pedal steel runs and country chords marinated in bourbon. Don't forget about Alana's new record as well, featuring her own homespun tunes augmented by unassailable guest luminaries such as Van Dyke Parks (!!!) and John B. Sebastian (!?!?!)

The Darker Scratcher Amateur Surgery Show
The Show is an itinerant pseudoscience lecture series, an ambulatory film screening, an elaborately unsatisfying Q&A, a speculation on obsolescence, and a cockeyed perspective looking at the lively rubbing of a piece of plastic. another round of buffalo wings, please.
The Show takes the form of a medicine/ variety show. The content plays around with the relationship between our bodies and technology, how our fiddling human form is understood by it's failures and aberrations, how these sorts of deviations manipulate our knowledge of each other and the world, and so on. The show as a whole plays with the propagandizing momentum of technology, the juxtaposition of magic and statistics, the self justifying idea of use, the idea of progress.

THE MUFFS
Kim Shattuck formed the Muffs with bassist Ronnie Barnett, drummer Criss Crass and Melanie Vammen in 1991. After two singles for indie labels Sub Pop and Sympathy for the Record Industry in 1991/92, which generated a large underground buzz, the Muffs were picked up by Warner Bros and subsequently released their powerful eponymous debut album in 1993. Shortly after, Crass left the group and was replaced temporarily by drummer Jim Laspesa for the tour. After switching to Reprise Records in 1994 and after a year of touring in venues throughout the world, the Muffs headed back into the studio to record the follow-up, Blonder and Blonder released in 1995; now a three-piece due to Vammen's departure. Right before recording Blonder and Blonder, ex- Redd Kross drummer and longtime Muffs friend Roy McDonald joined the group. Happy Birthday to Me followed in 1997 and two years later in 1999 Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow was released by Fat Wreckords; a rarities collection, Hamburger, appeared in early 2000 on Sympathy for the Record Industry... The Muffs released their new CD Really Really Happy on Five Foot Two Records during the Summer 2004 and toured the US and Japan later that year. Guess what, We are currently writing and about to record a full length record! Did you ever think that would happen again? Well it is. Right now!

THE UNDEAD 30th Anniversary Show
Moved to friday at the Delancey!
THE UNDEAD debuted at the A7 Club on January 30th 1981, which also helped to light the spark that became the East Village Renaissance 30 years ago... and in honor of this monumental event, we're putting together a show at THE STUDIO at WEBSTER HALL - which some of you may remember as THE RITZ, the scene of the infamous 1981 'Misfits/Undead' riot. SHOW MOVED TO THE DELANCEY!!
It's always fun to return to the 'scene of the crime'. Of course, the last time we p......layed here, in December 1993 – the audience was surprised to see Joey Image jump onstage to do a few Misfits classics. I’m reaching out to a number of former bandmates, and inviting them to attend, and maybe join us onstage.
Not so much a ‘reunion’ for the original A7 scene, as it is a good cheap night out ($10) with great Live music. We'll reprise the original 1981 20-minute set, plus other classic Undead hits - and introduce some of our latest material.
I'm trying to hunt down as many of my A7 survivor friends, and bands as possible for this night. Stay posted here for updates.

NYC Food Crawl Presents: The January Shumai Crawl
Shumai is a delightful Chinese appetizer that is traditionally served with Dim Sum meals. Dim Sum, or small treasures, is a traditional Chinese tasting meal. Shumai comes in both shrimp and pork varieties, and we happily will be offering a vegetarian option. (Also, don't forget that scallion pancakes are a delightful meat-free snack easy to find in Chinatown.)
The NYC Food Crawl is a monthly adventure in small, portable, and inexpensive treats. Come to try new foods, make new friends, or just get some exercise (but we promise, the route will involve short walks between hosting locations this month). Whether you have team members in mind or no, we can help you out. Our inaugural crawl was the dumpling crawl, and in that spirit we happily present the January Shumai Crawl. Route map and team assignments provided. Pay as you go, go at your own pace, and make new friends.

Well it is. Right now!

THE UNDEAD 30th Anniversary Show
Sunday, January 30 · 8:00pm - 11:00pm
THE STUDIO at Webster Hall
125 E 11th Street
New York, NY
THE UNDEAD debuted at the A7 Club on January 30th 1981, which also helped to light the spark that became the East Village Renaissance 30 years ago... and in honor of this monumental event, we're putting together a show at THE STUDIO at WEBSTER HALL - which some of you may remember as THE RITZ, the scene of the infamous 1981 'Misfits/Undead' riot.

Well it is. Right now!

THE UNDEAD 30th Anniversary Show
Sunday, January 30 · 8:00pm - 11:00pm
THE STUDIO at Webster Hall
125 E 11th Street
New York, NY
THE UNDEAD debuted at the A7 Club on January 30th 1981, which also helped to light the spark that became the East Village Renaissance 30 years ago... and in honor of this monumental event, we're putting together a show at THE STUDIO at WEBSTER HALL - which some of you may remember as THE RITZ, the scene of the infamous 1981 'Misfits/Undead' riot.

January 13 – February 12, Anatomy of the Eye
Josée Bienvenu Gallery is pleased to present “Anatomy of the Eye”, Robert Jack’s fifth solo exhibition in New York. Robert Jack’s work is based on microbiological systems and processes, making visible essential aspects of life that are overlooked due to their imperceptible scale. The exhibition consists of two bodies of work: a group of seven new paintings based on the way the eye perceives reality in different species, and a collection of intimate scale drawings.

BOO-HOORAY presents SUCKADELIC Art Toy Exhibition

The SUCKADELIC Art Toy Universe

Closing Party: January 23, 2011, 3pm
OPEN EVERYDAY 11pm-6pm
521 W 23RD ST, NEW YORK, NY 10011
The Boo-Hooray Gallery reluctantly announces the first SUCKADELIC retrospective gallery exhibition. Intentionally confusing, misleading, disappointing and really funny, the limited edition parodies of action figures reverberate with a vicious wit and are oddly eyeball-pleasing in the manner of all kinds of toothsome 20th/21st century collage and montage art.
