PHOEBE WASHBURN
Nunderwater Nort Lab
in collaboration with Mary Boone Gallery
Zach Feuer Gallery, in collaboration with Mary Boone Gallery, is pleased to present two exhibitions by Phoebe Washburn: Nunderwater Nort Lab, a site-specific installation, at Zach Feuer Gallery and Temperatures in a Lab of Superior Specialness, an exhibition of new sculpture, at Mary Boone Gallery.
Phoebe Washburn's work explores generative systems based on absurd patterns of production often created by inefficiency. The rules that govern Washburn's systems of production inform her sculpture and installation formally as well as conceptually.
Exhibition dates: June 30-August 12, 2011

SHAKEOUT IV: Life Preservers

59-14 Beach Channel Drive
Saturday, August 13, 2011
From noon until midnight
**SHAKEOUT RETURNS TO MARINA 59 IN ROCKAWAY WITH ART, MUSIC, FOOD, BOATELS, AND MORE**
Fourth Incarnation of Free Arts Festival Brings Together Local Artists and Performers
This year marks the fourth incarnation of Shakeout, an annual group show organized by local artists and curators in Far Rockaway, New York that is free and open to the public.
site-specific art installations, live music and performances, food, boat rides, and much, much more.
As part of the show, a group of young New York-based artists were asked to create site-specific works within the marina. Some of the works include old, junked boats that are being painted and transformed into various art installations, some are incorporated into the marina docks themselves, and others are placed directly in the waters of Jamaica Bay and will be accessible by boat. The marina will have kayaks and motorboats available for hourly rental, and has also placed a swimming dock in the middle of the bay so that, as swimmers or boaters approach the dock, they will be able to experience floating sculptures along the way. Shakeout IV will also feature artwork presented in Marina 59’s ArtBloc, a mobile exhibition and performance space that is currently in residency at the marina.
A series of live performances and music shows will take place throughout the day and into the evening. Highlights include Sandflower Dyson, This Frontier Needs Heroes, Little Band of Sailors, Hunter Simpson, A’yen Tran and The Boat for Singing Together, Rob Bronco, Alice Shyy and her “Note-aoke” and a synchronized swimming performance especially created for Shakeout by Nicole Sciarrillo. Local favorites Veggie Island and DiCosmo’s Italian Ices will offer food and refreshments for sale, and Zablozki’s bar in Williamsburg will provide a bar with drinks available for purchase.
Shakeout will also feature artist Contance Hockaday’s “Boggsville Boatels,” recently featured in The New York Times, which will act as platforms for performances throughout the day and sleeping quarters for guests after 8pm. All boatels are currently sold out for the event but Shakeout attendees are welcome to camp at the marina.

Dagmara Genda Presents: Building Disaster
Friday, August 19, 7-10 pm
195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn, NY
FREE Admission
Dagmara Genda’s work is massive yet intimate, Soviet and American, insistently flat with a resonance achieved through technical ingenuity and a startling story-telling force.
Come celebrate the first NYC show of Dagmara Genda, the winner of the 3rd Ward Winter Open Call. Born in Communist Poland and a self-described nomad of Canada, Genda creates consuming cityscapes that tell of blunt, brutal histories with an uncommon delicacy.
Building Disaster will feature a large-scale, site-specific installation made of intricate hand-cut glossy vinyl that will take over an entire hallway in 3rd Ward. Other works are achieved through repeatedly layering rounds of wallpaper-like painting and drawing. Both painstaking methodologies confuse spatial relationships and create a visual tension with texture and a weighty world turned upside-down. By juxtaposing poverty and opulence, destruction and elegance, Genda has created a cacophonous riot that thrills.
Featuring DJs and complimentary drinks and pickles from Spear's Spears.
