“Hero, Villain, Yeti: Tibet in Comics”
Characters as diverse as Mickey Mouse, the historical Buddha, Tomb Raider Lara Croft, and the Green Lama have something in common: Tibet. For more than sixty years Tibet has figured in comic books from around the world, at times creating and at times perpetuating notions of an otherworldly land roamed by the yeti, inhabited by wise and powerful lamas, or full of dark magic.
Hero, Villain, Yeti features the most complete collection of comics related to Tibet ever assembled, with examples ranging from the 1940s to the present. More than fifty comic books from the Belgium, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and the United States reflect on the depiction of Tibet, tracing the historical roots of prevailing perceptions and stereotypes and their visual and narrative evolution over time.

312 Bowery NYC
GIVERNY
By E.V. Day and Kembra Pfahler
March 30th – April 24th, 2012
The Hole is proud to announce the exhibition “Giverny,” a collaboration between E.V. Day and Kembra Pfahler opening March 30th. The artists created photographic works in the famous French gardens built and immortalized in paint by Claude Monet, and will be exhibiting them for the first time here on the Bowery.
Playboy.com has generously funded this massive exhibition, for the duration of which the Hole will be transformed into a living, breathing garden—with a lily-padded pond traversed by Monet’s signature green Japanese arched bridge, and scattered with the indigenous plants he is famous for painting. The walls of the exhibition will be printed with the almost claustrophobically green willow trees that surround this historic French site, and your first step into the gallery will be onto grass.
Kembra Pfahler is an artist and rock musician, best known as the painted lead singer of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, a theatrical death rock band she co-founded in 1990.
E. V. Day (born 1967, New York) is a New York-based installation artist and sculptor.
The Hole is open Tuesday-Saturday 12-7pm

Vivian Maier: Unseen Images
Exhibition: April 12th - May 26th
Opening Reception: April 12th, 6-8pm
Also Showing: Chip Simone
Steven Kasher Gallery is delighted to again present the recently discovered work of Vivian Maier. Vivian Maier: Unseen Images features 35 black and white prints. When Maier died in 2009, she left behind more than 120,000 negatives and 2,000 undeveloped rolls of film. Last year, a couple hundred of these rolls, shot in the 1960s and 1970s, were finally developed. A selection of these images make their debut in this exhibition.
Maier, whose day job was as a nanny, made over 100,000 distinctive street photographs, mostly in New York City and Chicago. What is known about Ms. Maier is that she was born in New York in 1926, lived in France (her mother was French) and returned to New York in 1951. Five years later, she moved to Chicago, where she worked for about 40 years as a nanny, principally for families in the North Shore suburbs. On her days off she wandered the streets of New York and Chicago, most often with a Rolleiflex camera. She did not share her pictures with others; many of them she never saw herself.

A one-on-one live-art piece that mocks the classic, quickie Lost Vegas wedding: the difference is that you marry yourself, not someone else - complete with mini-chapel, costuming, rings, multiple choice vows, and a wedding photo. Host-Guides fuss over you and the Encouraging Priestess personally presides over your ceremony. What happens in the mirror when you repeat those vows into your eyes? Are the vows for real? It's up to you. Guests and attendants celebrate as you emerge, freshly married, and ready to plan that honeymoon with yourself. Free libations by Original Sin Cider. Space is limited, sign up early.
